After the success with the Polo GT TSI, Volkswagen now plans to launch a new performance diesel version of the hatchback. The Polo with red number plates and GT TDI badging has been spotted a few times and is expected to be launched in the third quarter of 2013.

Although there is no confirmation from VW regarding the new model, looking at the specs of the petrol GT model we can speculate a bit about the oil burner. The Polo GT TDI will most probably be powered by the 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine from the Vento, developing 103bhp and 250Nm of torque.

With marginal weight reduction, the diesel Polo GT will have better fuel efficiency and performance than the Vento sedan. It is also expected to be made available only in the top-spec version with features from the standard Polo Highline diesel.

There are a few things that might not work in the favour of Polo GT TDI. The diesel version is expected to get a five-speed manual gearbox, unlike the seven-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic of the TSI. Also the prices of this model will be a bit higher with the bigger engine, as the car will not classify as a hatchback under the current tax regime and will be taxed at higher rate.
The Polo GT TDI is expected to be priced around Rs 8.5 lakh, creating a niche for itself above rest of the performance diesel hatchbacks like the Tata Vista D90 and the Fiat Punto Sport.

    Expected Launch: July 2013

    Expected Price: Rs. 8-9 lakhs
